The Mid-Atlantic State was created by the Mitosis Act of 1996, passed at the JSA Spring State Convention of that year and made effective July 1, 1997. Through this legislation, the Atlantic State, spanning from Maine to Florida, was divided into the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic States. The border between these two states is the New York-New Jersey state line, and has remained so for the past ten years, since mitosis. Over the two years following the passage of this act, the state split was gradually implemented until the division became final.

At its inception, the Mid-Atlantic State contained two regions, the New Jersey Region and the Southern Atlantic Region. These regions remain in place today. As its name implies, the New Jersey Region contains the all the area of the state of New Jersey. The South Atlantic Region spans from Pennsylvania to North Carolina (Florida and South Carolina recently became part of a separate territory).

Today, with over 2000 students and 100 chapters, the Mid-Atlantic State is a thriving area in the Junior State of America. Conventions are held in Cherry Hill, NJ; Washington, D.C.; and Parsippany, NJ. We hope to see you there!
