| Welcome to the Mid-Atlantic State’s home on the web! I am very excited, as I am sure you are as well, to begin the 2007-2008 JSA school year, which promises to be the best in the MAS’ 11 years of statehood. As you may read throughout our website, JSA was founded some 74 years ago in San Mateo, California, by Professor Ernest A. Rogers. His goal was to create a constructive environment where high school students – the future leaders of America – could come to discuss politics, current events, government, and the law. Given the period of world war during which the Junior State of America was founded, Prof Rogers was understandably concerned that democracy was in peril, and was determined to foster an appreciation for it in America’s youth. |
 |
| In this, Prof Rogers seems to have succeeded. Our motto, “Democracy is not a spectator sport,” reminds us of the importance of being participatory members in our democratic government.
Today, the Junior State of America is the largest student-run organization in the United States, with tens of thousands of members across the country and its territories.
The Mid-Atlantic State is a major player in the development of JSA as a national organization. We boast nearly 2,000 dedicated members in approximately 100 chapters throughout New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, Washington D.C., Virginia, North Carolina, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Of the nine Junior States, we are the second-largest both in terms of the number of chapters and membership, and thanks to the efforts of our Lieutenant Governor Christina Rosivack and her spectacular expansion team, we are fast approaching what everyone already knows we are - #1!
And so this new website is a testament to the strength of the Mid-Atlantic State. Here, you will find all of the information you should need to have a positive and fulfilling experience as a JSAer – a lot of it was written by last year’s cabinet, especially by Gabriella Ra'anan and Ramon Carreras. I’d also like to thank this year’s Mid-Atlantic Director of Technology Richie Gerbino for all of the hard work and long hours he has put into coding and designing this website.
If you have any questions or would like to make any suggestions as to how we can improve this website or our JSA state in general, please do not hesitate to contact myself or anyone else on our outstanding, dedicated cabinet. I look forward to seeing you at our upcoming conferences and conventions!
Sincerely,
Bryan J. Matis
Mid-Atlantic State Governor
