A JSA minicon, short for mini-conference, is an event that any JSA chapter can host at its school during the school year. Minicons have a similar structure to conventions and regional conferences, consisting of multiple debates in each debate block and an underlying theme to tie the whole event together.

However, there is a more lighthearted feel to the debates of a minicon than to those of a convention or regional conference.

These events provide an atmosphere for some of the most intelligent debates as well as some of the most entertaining ones. They are an excellent way for newcomers to learn about some of the things to expect at a major JSA event.

JSA minicons also provide a bridge between the chapter and regional levels of JSA. They give new JSA members the chance to see what JSA is about beyond the chapter level. Moreover, they allow members the opportunity to meet new people from nearby chapters. Minicons can become particularly important in the months leading up to JSA elections, as they often include forums for candidates, who love to debate each other about their positions and ideas for the following year. Chapter members can voice their questions, concerns, and suggestions to the candidates at minicons.

For those chapters interested in holding a minicon at their schools, they should know that minicons are held on weekends, usually Saturdays. Minicons can be held at any time during the school year so long as there is not already a JSA event planned for that weekend. Chapters hosting minicons can also use minicons as major fundraising events by selling food at lunchtime or charging admission at the door.

If you have any questions or if you wish to hold a minicon at your school, contact your regional elected officials or your region’s Director of Minicons.
